Process: Use of Ethidium bromide for visualization of nucleic acids.
Hazard: Potent mutagen. Moderately toxic.
Equipment: Wear chemical safety goggles when using Ethidium bromide. Avoid skin contact, Ethidium bromide may be absorbed through the skin. Use NATURAL rubber gloves.
Ventilation: Use only in a chemical fume hood. Safety shower and eyewash should be easily accessible where Ethidium bromide is used.
Procedures: Store in a cool, dry place away from strong oxidizing agents. Keep containers tightly closed. Use with adequate ventilation.
Procedures: In case of contact with eyes, immediately flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. In case of skin contact, immediately wash skin with soap and water. If inhaled, remove to fresh air and seek medical attention. Contact EH&S at 1-2356.
FOLLOW SPILL PROCEDURE FOR SPILL CLEANUP
Disposal: All waste shall be placed in closed containers, properly labeled and moved to the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Structure (south west corner of SGM). Notify Roger Clark of Waste to be picked up from the Hazardous Waste Accumulation area.
Approval: Principle Investigator/Responsible Person approval is required before use of this material.
Labeling: Whenever Ethidium Bromide is mixed and stored outside of its original container, it must be clearly marked with its concentration and a description of its hazards. Always use full chemical name on label.
